Of Gratitude and Encouragement. A year-ender post.

source

It's December 31st and I am writing nothing that pertains to the outside beauty. There will be no product reviews, recaps of this year nor the usual face of the day... Instead, I come to you all, devoid of makeup as I type away in bed...

This year has been a turmoil of events that both overwhelmed and sated me.

Let's cut to the chase and just say that I never really thought to be where I am right now. I use to be this girl in gradeschool and highschool cutting out articles of newspaper and magazine and wondering when will I ever have a byline or a column of my own. When will I have my own magazine? With a sketch pad, I would draw away my imagination fashion trends and write dating tips that only me could read....

I've always wanted to be writer. But I know I'm never really good at it. I regret never paying too much attention in my grammar subjects in grade school and high school that if my former teachers could see me now, they'd be surprise I am writing.

But this is the year that proved me that I can do anything. Not flawlessly well, but I did it. I was able to share with thousands of people about the simple joys of makeups. There's an author that once said to write what you know. And even now, that is exactly what I'm doing... I'm not writing anything relevant, yes... nothing that would change the world or bring peace... but I know that somehow this writing is not only feeding my soul and my enthusiasm.. but it's feeding others' as well...

source
That is why before the year ends, I encourage everyone to write. Write about anything you know or anything you think needed writing... because you just don't know.. that with those few words, you are changing somebody else's life..

Thank you so much to all my readers for continuously visiting my blog for good makeup reads and to see my escapades in the beauty world. You're a big part of why I am doing exactly what I have always wanted to do.. because of you who subscribe and read it and liking my posts, I am ignited with passion to more... Thank you! Thank you!

Thank you because through this, this year was not haunted by too much tears nor loneliness... This year, I had more smiles and laughter. This year was a blast!
source

Before the year ends, I will go back to my roots and spend the new year with my relatives and think back the days.. somehow, reminiscing of who I was before all of this will gain me a more wider perspective. Which in turn I hope results to newer and more helpful posts to share with you.

Thank you again for sharing your time with me. I will you all a happy new year! :)

See you on 2011 for another year of beauty-filled posts and surprises.. :)

much much love,
Shen

A Child's Glee in Woman's Vanity, A Shu Umuera X Aya Takano Story

It seems that my childhood has yet to leave my 27 year old body since I'm still fascinated by anything pink and whimsical. I am not amashed to embrace the little girl in me simply because I think it keeps me young. I enjoy this small bursts of excitement and if it comes in a form of a makeup, then they are more than welcome. Imagine your childhood cravings being sated as well as your needs for vanity as woman... Sheer heaven and a gift worth wrapping and slowly unwrapping for yourself.. :)

Godsend this year has been to me as I've received countless blessing in the form of new friends, new experiences and since I am human and I love earthly things, new material things as well.

Shu Uemura Aya Takano was unexpected surprise that came to me one event when I was handed this cute pink box tied with a pinkier pink bow with my name and blogsite on the lower right corner... I eagerly unwrapped it and saw the wonderful things inside. I could swear the the tissue covering the coveted things seemed like forever for the excited...

Alas, an early joy of Christmas as I saw these three whimsy products underneath. :)

Really, who could ever resist these beauties? I surely can't... :)

Having known that makeup have perilous side to them, keeping a Shu Uemura Skin Purifier trips my face with the unwanted cosmetic residue that could clog my pores and cause unwanted skin blemishes. I never take a bath nor go to sleep without properly cleaning my face and Shu Uemura Cleansing Oils, I've proven to be tough on makeup and gentle to my skin.

I've always wanted a pony... but I guess I could settle with the drawings of Aya Takano of a girl dressed in frills riding her own very horse. Doesn't she look sublime? Sigh...

-o-

Lip Duo Tint and Love in Love Apricot reminds me of my MAC Cut-a-caper but this is much gentler on the lips... the gloss gives a pretty alluring effect and I just love how it makes my whole face look... well, younger.. :)

I am certainly ready for summer with Love Apricot... :)

-o-

Sparkly Purple is takes my eye makeup to a festive turn as its gold specks reveal a more glittery effect to my whole look... I feel like one of Aya Takano's work of art whenever I use this Shu Uemura Paint Crayon.. :)

-o-

But the best of all, was when my childhood was again awaken when a very good friend gave me a Shu Uemura X Aya Takano Blush Tint in Miracle Cherry. It's been on my Christmas Wishlist and she has found a way to give one to me... Thank you thank you thank you so much... :)

I received this gift early morning with my eyes still half closed from sleep, but I as I slowly unwrapped and saw a glimpse of what seemed to be a pink box, my eyes grew wide and my fingers started to work faster!! I couldn't help but shrieked with surprise and gratitude. Thank you, Secret Santa. Thank you for this wonderful gift!! Your friendship is already enough of a gift to last me many Christmases but this one was a nice Miracle Cherry on top. :)

Product Review: Revlon Photo Ready Compact Makeup

Cream Foundations are probably the best formula for especially when attending a very important event and I needed my face to be at its best behavior. Meaning, no blemishes and flawlessly made up. But cream foundations can be a bit too much for the younger skin and often not recommended.

Not anymore. When I was sent the Revlon PhotoReady Compact Makeup, I got giddy at the prospect of using another cream base foundation. But this one is a quite different... Find out why below. :)

My MAC Lipstick Collection

Happy Holidays/Monday everyone!!

How's your Christmases? Mine was such a blast. I spent it with my mother's side of family and a few relatives came over from Houston. It's nice to see cousins I haven't seen for nearly a decade. Seeing my mom's relatives makes me nostalgic and I even cried when my Tita Carmern and I were reminiscing about mom. It was happy tears, though. :) It's funny that she tells me I have the same mannerisms as mom's. I truly miss her and but I'm not letting it get in the way of enjoying my Christmas. It was a truly blessed time to be with those she was really close with and to see mom through their eyes.

So yes, it was truly a merry Christmas for me this year 2010. :)

But let's get on with the show, shall we? These pictures have been sittingon my Products Folder for awhile now and while I was thinking of a post on our way home from a party this morning, I thought of my MAC Lipstick Collection. But why now and why this?

Neutrogena Fine Fairness Launch: Start The Year Light

It was a proud moment for the Philippine beauty blogging sphere last December 16, 2010 when Phoebe Ann Ramos of Phoebeann.me, Jane Kingsu-Cheng of mystylekit.com, Earth Rullan of Earlinggorgeous.com and Hannah Villasis of Flaircandy.com walked alongside Philippine's popular beauty Icons Patty Laurel, Isabel Roces, Georgia Schulze-del Rosario and Solenn Heusaff as Neutrogena's Fine Fairness Ambassadresses. All these eight women were glowing as they walked the catwalk of Beauty by SM at SM Makati! The power of Neutrogena's Fine Fairness at its best!

YumYum: Cebu's Zubuchon (OMG! You gotta see this!)

Before everything else, I would like to thank Radisson Blu Hotel Cebu for giving me a chance to finally get a taste of the famous Zubuchon!

I'm not really a food connoisseur, I'm actually very picky with my food and I'm a bane to a chef's existence. Except when his specialty is good meaty pork with lots and lots of "balat". As a matter of fact, I'm not a lechon eater... I just like the crunchy crackling skin.

They all tell me that Zubuchon is different and that its going to be something I aught not to miss... True to their promises, it was sooooo damn good!  Zubuchon lechon is by far the best roast pig I have ever tasted. I didn't even eat any rice with mine! I just ate the lechon, from the lama to balat, without nary a sauce! It was that good... it was kanin and ulam combined.

I'm not surprise Anthony Bourdain called this the best roast pig ever!!

From NYC: Urban Decay Book of Shadows III NYC Palette

An early Christmas gift came from New York a few weeks back and it's no less than Urban Decay Book of Shadows Volume III New York City Palette. It's not a secret that I collect the Urban Decay Book of Shadows, thanks for Gracie for being the first one to have made it possible for me to get my hands on Urban Decay Book of Shadows. I know many people have the problem with it having similar shades in each palette. But for me, that's not a problem since I'm a big fan of all Urban Decay eyeshadows. They are exactly type of shadows I like, satiny and shimmery. Playing around all my Book of Shadows is always a joy for me.

Blue Lace and Bit of Gold

I think my favorite color is blue... well, at least it's in the top three. I really love blue especially when it comes to my blothing. It's like black for me... :) When I saw this in Forever 21, I knew I can't let go of it. For less than Php900, I had a keeper in my hands.

It was a great thing because I was invited to an event that night that required to dress a little bit, well, dressier. I also got to strut my blue suede pumps from the same brand. Fab, right?

The dress, the shoes and my accessories are very matchy-matchy. I still can't find myself to be adventurous like those beautiful fashion blogs I read. They just exude an aura I can't emulate... This outfit is already as far as adventurous and fasyon as I could go.

Yumyum: Felix Restaurant at Greenbelt 5

I got a chance to dine at Felix Restaurant at Greenbelt 5. It's conveniently located at the garden side of the mall and has a view that makes you think you're not in the center of a business district. The place has a sense of calm and I felt well, special.

My mom loved restaurants like this.. I'm sure that if given a chance, we would be dining here.

What also attracted me is the menu. It's Filipino-fusion that I am quite in love with.

I chose Basti, a pan fried sea bass and foie gras with Chardonnay Sauce, served with potato puree and green asparagus. Cooked to perfection, my sea bass was not so dry nor too oily.. it was just how I wanted it. The Chardonnay sauce was the perfect combination. Just the right creaminess.

MAC Cut-a-caper LE Lipstick and Pond's Gold Radiance Effects

I've always thought that I can't ever wear lighter shade of lipstick. I experimented in my early days of being a beauty enthusiast but nothing seems to be that "it" lighter lipstick for me. Everything I tried made me look all washed out and well, looking like the newest member of the Twilight cast. Not very beauty-ish. What is more weird is that I thought that skincare that gives glowing effects will aggravate my very oily skin. On both accounts, I was wrong... I could find that lighter shade of lippie that looks good on me and second, there is glow without the oil involve... :)

Cut-a-caper, in the middle
I knew I wouldn't regret it... but I honestly had apprehensions. I mean, how sure was I that a shade so light and peachy could work on my skintone? I honestly thought it wasn't possible... But! Thanks to my impulsiveness and being easily influenced, now I am enjoying a fabulous coral/peach shade that will have a lot of use during the summer. :)

I couldn't be more pleased with this purchase of MAC Cut-a-caper from their latest collection, The Tartan Tale. I do hope I'd see Cut-a-caper again in upcoming collections because this is really a nice shade for most skintones. I love how it instantly brightens up the look.

Amazing how a simple lipstick could have an effect on your whole look, right?

Our Skin Needs A Dose of Gold

I've started using *Pond's Gold Radiance sporadically through out the weeks since I've got it and I'm seeing alot of difference in my skin. It's a lot smoother, the lines less "out there", my skin tone is a lot more even... overall, my skin is just improving. You all know I don't edit my photos and when I saw my skin here (this was prior to my Obagi facial), I just realize how fabulous it looked.

Mind you, I was just using a mineral foundation powder and have not used any of my photogenic liquid foundation since it was an outside event. I just love how my skin feels with the Pond's Gold Radiance. I'm currently using the *Pond's Gold Radiance Radiance Revealed Facial Foam and *Pond's Gold Radiance Precious Youth Serum from the collection that it looks like it's paying off, now?

Now, I am still using them along side my Obagi Clenziderm collection and La Mer The Eye Balm Intense and it seems to be working as a fabulous night treatment! :)

I really think that when we start staying up late and having stress from work and life, we should start thinking of using an anti-aging treatment. It's such a job becoming a woman sometimes in this world with the many hats to put... it's really time we indulge in something more lavish... a dose of Gold Radiance by Pond's is what I recommend! :)

No surprise here, I used my Urban Decay Book of Shadows palettes. :) I just love how it instantly brighten my eyes and and choosing the colors is not so difficult. Everything goes together. I decided to go on the neutral since my oversize tee was already a bright shade of coral, same as my lipstick.

Tips when wearing lighter shade of lipstick:

1. Exfoliate lips with an old or baby toothbrush or a lip scrub to remove deadskin and to even out the texture of your lips. (I prefer using the hotel toothbrush, it's not to hard nor too "used")
2. Moisturize your lips with a lip balm prior to applying any makeup on. This gives time for the lip balm to seep onto your lips and prep it.
3. Blot excess lip balm with a soft facial tissue.
4. If it's your first time to use a brighter lighter lip shade, use a lip brush and start from the inside of middle part of your lips and work your way out. Lip brush makes sure that your lipstick application is a lot more even.
5. Blot your lips once.
6. Apply your another layer again.
7. This is optional, but you can top your lipstick with a gloss for a bit of shine.

Love yourself

Great looking skin is apparently achievable. A feat I thought was a lost cause. But most importantly, it's not only the products that would cause for my skin to look soft and supple... it's me loving life, deflecting the negative vibes and just being happy. I've started to disallow anyone from affecting me in ways that keep up late at night. I've learned to chanel a lot of possitivity in myself. To be grateful for the things I have. It may be the spirit of Christmas that is making me like this... but lately, I'm a lot happier and my smile comes a lot easier.. Maybe it's a part of some healing of sorts but I am happy.

Thanks for always being there... you're a great big chunk of what keeps me smiling more everyday. :)

Urban Woman: Guide to a Stylish, Savvy Shopping at Promod

Christmas is near and there's a lot of shopping to do! And with how everything went this year, I feel like I need to reward myself just tad bit for all the hard work I've done. I really think I deserve it. Hehehe! But of course, I just can't think about myself. That's why I always give myself a budget whenever I do Christmas shopping for myself. That way I make sure that I have enough for me and everyone I love.

I recently visited Promod at Greenbelt 5 and I was surprise with the purchases I made. I was able to get really good stuff for the 5k budget that I had. But before I got to purchase all those good stuff, I put some shopping tips and tricks to test.

Being a stylish and savvy shopper is very hard especially when we are in a store full of fabulous things that we just want to take home. So keep these few tricks in mind before you make a purchase!

Product Review: Grow Luscious Mascara with Fabulash

I've had the Revlon Grow Luscious mascara for weeks now. I really wanted to review this unbiasedly because I honestly didn't like it at first swipe. It was doing nothing and it looked like a regular mascara. Obviously, what made this special is the Fabulash formula incorporated on the mascara. It promises to reduce lash fall and strengthen the lashes.

As a mascara, Grow Luscious works like a regular one. It actually reminded me of those old mascaras my tita used. Nothing at all alike to any of the mascara wands I've seen lately. It's a tad too big and the bristles are thick. This made applying the formula a bit easy on the mid lashes but not on the ends... which is the major problem for those who are new to using mascaras.

The consistensy is just right for me. It dries right on time and gives a coat with just a swipe. I'm very happy when it comes to the formulation of this mascara. The brush, I'm sure there's a good explanation why Revlon decided to use a wand for their Grow Luscious.

Urban Woman: Your First Makeup Kit (How to start and what to buy)

For many women out there I know there are some out there that are just living with face powder and lip balm... some are even using the travel-size baby powder. Maybe, it's time for upgrade.

In the beginning, I would always make excuses for just having two makeup products in my vanity and in my makeup bag. Why the hell would I want to put on makeup when I don't even know how to use it? Natural beauty is the best, right?

Stop making excuses! Accept the fact that makeup enhances your feature and reduces your flaws! You'll look a lot better with makeup. Even if you're the prettiest, no pores, no pimples, uber fair girl in the world! And don't go on sour-graping on us who actually could hold an eye pencil. You can, too! :) If you're beauty is natural... I'm sure you've got some natural talents that is beauty-related, too.

That is why I was sooooo excited when I received a letter from Mav, asking me to help her out by recommending what she should get for her first makeup kit!

Hi, Mav!

I'm so happy that you are finally joining the fabulous world of makeup. It really is a wonderful world. Makeup is a vanity but I think of it mainly as confidence booster and worth-watcher. You know, makeup reminds me of my worth... if I can take the time out to apply a nice shade of lipstick, then there is no reason that I can make a fabulous presentation on my project. If my skin so flawless, it's one way to boost myself to finally close a deal for our company. If I'm not worried that my undereyes aren't showing from my lack of sleep, then my people wouldn't think I'm not strong enough to handle them.... Something like that... :)

But buying is not an easy feat. Boy oh boy... it isn't. That's why I want you to read my Guide to Makeup Shopping after reading this post, okay?

House of Obagi Acne Cure Therapy, Glycolic Peel and ZO Oclipse

I've been wanting to try House of Obagi since I first heard of it opening in Greenbelt 5. But when I was given a gift card and a chance to visit House of Obagi, I didn't deny myself anymore.

My skin was sort of breaking out at that time for no apparent reason but to piss me off. I've got this huge zit on my chin that it was a hell to look at. The doctor recommended Acne Cure Therapy, a treatment that I want to try since I think that many Filipinas share the same condition as I do. I also got the Glycolic Peel that is a good partner for Acne Cure Therapy. I also had my pimples injected with steroids to help it flatten much faster.

House of Obagi only has two rooms so appointments are a must. I had mine booked days in advance. You'll be asked to lie down as usual and you'll be fitted with your head band and towels. You'll do nothing from then on. Just sit back, relax and enjoy the treatment.. Of course, I want to enjoy the treatment! I was in House of Obagi!! :)

The treatment lasts a lot longer compared to those I've tried in other clinics. Cleansing methods was really strict and all the products used are Obagi! Your face is in skin care product Heaven! What I notice is how cool the products was whenever it was applied on me. I asked if if it's because of temperature but it isn't, my faciaist told me. Some are really cool but some just adapted the room's temp.

The Cleansing

My face was scrubbed first with a good-smelling scrub. Next was gentle massage with a cleanser and then another massage. This happened for about 20 minutes. Then my face was steamed for preparation of pricking. The pricking was very tolerable. My facialist's hand was really soft and light that I hardly felt any pain at all. I have low pain threshold so this part is really tough on me. But I was glad that I didn't suffer all that much. Also, sicne I've had years of experience of getting facials, I know when my face was not thoroughly cleansed (in pricking) and even with the facialist's light hands, I felt that she got a good amount of whiteheads and blackheads.

No Ouchie... much

Pricking is an important part of facial for me. I use a lot of makeup and often cleansing is not enough to remove them, no matter how hard I try. Since I have large pores, this is doubly hard for me. So, I really make sure that whenever I get a facial, there's pricking involve. To remove the excess dirt and to prevent my pimples from coming out. I know many are apprehensive and more so scared to try it, I'm not really going to force you... But for me, facial with pricking is the best facial to prevent my pimples. :)

Ewww...

House of Obagi really didn't disappoint on that regard. It's one of the best facials I've tried in a really long time. From the products used to prep my face, to how it was steamed and then, pricked.

Finishing up

Two of my most favorite part of the Acne Cure Therapy is the laser and mask. Call me weird, but I love of the scent that the laser gives off! LOL! It's one of the most anticipated part of the therapy foe me. The Glytone mask aids in speeding up the healing process and to aid skin renewal. If there's just one reason for me to get this facial again, I'd say its the mask! It's like a treatment in itself! I felt my skin reacting from it and it's reacting in a good way. It only last 5 to 10 minutes, too!

Hands down, this is by far the best treatment for Acne that I've tried. You really are paying for the quality of the treatment.

-o-

The Glycolic Peel

Since I know it'll be awhile the next time I go back for a facial, I decided to get the Glycolic Peel for the face. Peeling is such an addiction for me and I'm not to let a chance pass for me to try House of Obagi's Peeling treatments.

A doctor will facilitate this procedure (as it should be!), she first prepped my face, then applied the glycolic solution and asked me to give notice if the solution is intolerable. A neutralizer will be applied after letting the glycolic solution sit for a minute or two. After that, you're done!

Glycolic Peel is really recommended for those who wants to reduce the dark spots from their skin post-acne treatments. Peeling in Glycolic is not too visible to the naked eye. You'll hardly even feel your skin peeling as days past. The only downside is that the solution feels a bit sting-y on the face. Like ants moving around your face. It could get uncomfortable but not too much that you can't tolerate it.

Glycolic is one of my most favorite peeling procedures because you'll really feel the effects after two to three days. Even now, weeks after my procedure, my skin is still very smooth. :)

Post-procedure: Obagi ZO Oclipse

After getting my KI for my pimples, my facialist applied Obagi ZO Skin Health Oclipse Sunscreen and Primer SPF 30. It's a tinted mineral sunscreen that just made me look decent for walking out of the clinic. My eyes did look sleepy but the redness from the injection and pricking was hardly noticeable. (see above pictures)

With previous facials, my face would be uber red that I'd have to go home immediately after treatment for fear that I'd scare many people with my red bleeding face. I even had dinner and coffee with friends after my facial. :) Oclipse acted as a makeup but with healing and protection benefits. No wonder Phoebe and Sophie liked it so much!

The Result

I'm a happy lady walking out of House of Obagi. But best of all, my face felt fabulous for weeks that I wasn't even wearing face makeup when I go out. I was able to just go out with a cheek stain, mascara and gloss. :) Evidence?

Me sans Makeup! :)

Now, I'm incorporating the Clenziderm set in my Anti-aging skin care products to prevent pimples from breaking out. I'll post review that soon. :)

A visit in House of Obagi may be a bit more expensive than our usual facials but if you really want the best for your skin and something that will really work, then I'm telling you now that you will get your money's worth in House of Obagi. And quite honestly, you'd save a lot more in the long run because your skin will definitely improve. :)

House of Obagi is located at Greenbelt 5, beside Beabi.

Product Review: In2It Shiny and Matte Liquid Eyeliner

To be perfectly honest, I am not a fan of liquid liner with the soft thin brush hair that seem to make eyelining application go haywire. In my early attempts to try liquid eyeliner, I had the most difficult time ever imagined that I just gave up. But makeup school required me to use one again and well, I didn't have a choice. Apparently, it only take one thing to get the hang of using this seemingly difficult task. Practice, I just needed to practice. Easy feat? Not so much. But now, I don't find this small bottle daunting. :)

In makeup school, we were required to have 2 liquid liners, one in black and the other in brown. The ones I got was the In2It liquid liner. When I recently ran out of liquid eyeliner, I immediately went back to In2it and got their Shiny Line Define Liquid Liner and Matte Liquid Eyeliner Waterproof, both in black. As if you see me in anything but... :)

It's really a fabulous looking liquid eyeliner that is very much easy to use. Back when I was in makeup school, our instructor would tell us the liquid eyeliner is one of the best way to achieve the ever so popular winged-tip eye makeup look. Of course, at that time, I was dreading the moment that I will have to actually make use of it.
But thankfully, it wasn't as difficult as I thought it would be to apply liquid eyeliner to another person. I actually got the hang of it. :)

The brush is very thin and flattens into a straight flat brush for a more precise application. I've had my old In2it liner and the brush din't show any sign of wear and tear.

Matte and Shiny

Consistensy is well, liquid, but not too much that i had a hard time using it. It's surprisngly easy to apply especially when you've had experience using gel or felt tip liner.

What I love...
1. How it instantly opens up my eyes with one application.
2. The Shint, patent-like look of liquid liner.
3. Makes a good cat eyes.
4. Easy to tote around even when travelling.
5. The brush makes applying real easy.
6. Comes in different finishes and colors!
7. Available locally.
8. Great for doing face paint and body art. (ie. avant garde makeup)
9. Staying power is pretty decent...

What I don't...
1. Takes a while to get use to...
2. Not really that user-friendly.
3. Takes a while to dry.
4. Liquid liner tends to go goopy when not being used (this happened to my brown liquid liner)

Tips in using Liquid Eyeliner:

1. Swipe bruse once or twice on the mouth of the container
2. To have certain control in applying, rest your pinky finger on your cheek.
3. Slightly tug your eye lid to your temple and make it a lot easier to trace the outline of your eyes.
4. To make a wing tip, just flick the brush up ward to the outside of your eyelid. Make it as short or as long as you like my drawing it in to your lids.
5. Keep an eye makeup remover for liquid liner boo-boo's.
6. Do not apply on your waterline.
7. Liquid liner takes a while to dry, keep your eyes close to avoid ruining your makeup woth liquid liner stains.
8. Keep the liquid liner tightly close when not in use to keep the consistensy.
9. Use a cotton bud to remove mistake. This will lessen the need for you to redo your makeup altogether.

I still have a sort of love and hate relationship with liquid liner. I usually don't use this but there are days that I know that only a liquid liner can enhance my look. Not to mention that I'm quite adept to use this on others. For those who are up for the challenge, you can get yourself a liquid liner. But if not, there are other liners out there that can do job just as beautifully. :)
