Contouring and highlighting using cream-base products can be quite intimidating and this is a technique that I've putting off for quite a while. But New Year is about conquering fears! So, here I am taping the first time I ever contoured and highlighted and posted it all over the internet!

Quite the contrary, I find this process not as daunting as I thought it would be... with practice and proper products, I think I'd be a pro doing this! Here's to hoping, anyway.

I used the Dollface Concealer Palette for the contour. It's not as pliant as I thought it would be (after all, it's a concealer and meant to stay put) but applying moisturizer was a big help in blending. As for my highlight, the Graftobian Palette did come in handy.

Cream-based products when used for contouring and highlighting adheres better to the skin, it's more photogenic on cameras and have a natural way of making your face slimmer. This is why most celebrities prefer this technique and why makeup artist  Although it may take more work, the aftermath is just amazing.

On to the products. Although cream foundations are usually used when contouring and highlighting of this technique, there's no need to commit just yet to a more raved products, dig in through your stash liked I did and use that to practice. Better yet, talk to your friends who may be lighter or more tanned than you if their up for exchanging some their products.

When contouring it's better to keep the following in mind:

1. Figure out your face shape! This may mean a lot of time in the mirror and comparing your face to celebs on the magazine... but hey! It's worth it! Since I'm not good with describing, giving you celebrities to give you an idea on what it looks like.

  • Round Shape - think Scarlet Johanssen, Michelle Williams and me!
    • Contour: Cheek bone, Jawline, sides of the face, edge of hairline.
    • Highlight: Brow area, highest planes of the cheeks, in between jaws and cheekbones, bridge of the nose and cupid's bow.
  • Oblong - think Sarah Jessica Parker, Gwyneth Paltrow
    • Contour: Chin part and edge of hair line is it's protruding
    • Highlight: Apply instead on the apples of the cheeks as it helps widen the face.
  • Square - think Reese Witherspoon, Demi Moore
    • Contour: Jawline to achieve a more oval shape face up to the side of the face, temples until you get a more round or oval shape.
    • Highlight: Forehead and chin area.
  • Oval - think Rihanna, Beyonce and Tyra Banks
    • This is basically a perfect shape face, contour  jawline to and highlight the highest planes of the cheeks.
  • Heart - think Ciara and Halle Berry
    • Contour: Cheekbones and sides of the temples.
    • Highlight: forehead but just a tad bit and chin area.
Once you know your face shape, you will then know what part of the face to highlight and contour... and it's all action from then on! It's time to get busy, lady!

2. Less is more! Like in everything else (except LOVE), when contouring and highlighting better start with just a small amount and you can build your way up from there.

3. Blend well. Applying the highlight and contour may not need too much accuracy as you see in the video. But when it comes to the foundation part, it's important to blend

4. Practice and then some more. If there's one thing I learned about contouring, you can't just learn it in one go. Not even reading about it in makeup artistry books and internet is enough. It's a skill acquired and you acquire it with practice.

My skills need  more practice. But I hope you got the idea on how to contour and highlight your face with cream-base cosmetics. It's not really that simple but once you get pass the applying the creams on your face, it's all fun and blending. I have no doubt that in no time, you'll be able to cream-contour and highlight all you want and so perfectly to boot!

I hope it's not too late... Happy New Year, ladies and gents!

Have a nice time cream contouring and highlighting!

15 piece Concealer Palette
This palette is very versatile. There are so many uses. Like:
1. As concealer, of course
2. Cream contouring (great for bridal makeup)
3. Eyeshadow base (silver)
4. Corrector (green and violet)
5. As foundation. (scoop small amount to a separate container and sprits a little facial mist or Fix+)

73 piece Neutral Eyeshadow Palette

This is a must have for makeup artists whose forte are bridal makeups.
As for those who doesn't want to dip their toes into the colorful sea of makeup, this is the palette for you. I would have loved it though if it had black. But this the rest of the eyeshadow made up for the loss anyway. I'm very happy with this palette. Its such a great find.

I'm glad that I have the 15 piece Concealer Palette because I can use that as a primer base for these shadows to make the colors pop more. Now I can practice and recreate film and protrography makeup with these palettes.

Here's my attempt at using the 72 Piece palette (no base)

notes:
1. Use a base to acquire more pigmentation with the colors especially for fair skinned.
2. Play with colors to get great dimensional look for the eyes
(imagine tv show type of eyelooks compared from the night out type like smokey eyes)
Definitely a great practice for those who want to practice in doing film and television because that usually doesn't require shimmery looks. Mattes register well on the screen.
3. You can use the deeper brown shades as eyebrow colors or the lighter shade for contouring the nose.

Dollface Cosmetics
is one of the online shops that is selling makeup palettes at reasonable prices. I'm not saying that you shouldn't order from abroad but if you hate waiting like I do, I suggest you purchase from either Dollface Cosmetics or Space Pretty Store, it's not any different. They have lighting fast shipping, reasonable to almost free shipping, no-fuss transaction and very well secured packaging.

Now onto to the Concealer Palette...

I now call this palette the Cream ontour and Concealer Palette because the dark shades of are best used as cream contour. Our teacher, Ms. Cheryl, taught us this technique on our third session. Which also reminded me of Eve Pearl's foundation technique. What a way to maximize the darker colors of the palette i thought I'd never use.

As for it being a concealer palette, I'm sure many makeup artists will appreciate the wide range of shades in one container. The coverage is decent enough. Its creamy but not too creamy. Very much easy to blend. But I have yet to test the longevity of this product on shoots or everyday use. But you can remedy fading or caking that by setting it properly. Its really not bad especially when you're just practising. Just try to keep it away from warm area as it tends to get oily much like other concealers I own.

Tested it out today! :) I find that it covers my blemishes fairly well. I love that I don't have to reach out for jars or containers. It doesn't have that unpleasant smell, reminds of Cinema Secrets but with less coverage. No cakey effect, too. Love it!

4 out 5 stars in my book!

4 because you really can't beat the availability of it here in the Philippines, the affordable price, the shipping fee and the number of shades and uses of each.

Highlights:
  • I learned how to contour using cream formula. That way when I have the funds to purchase Makeup Forever's Panstick, I know its not just on a whim because I'll be able to use it properly as Sophie did when I modeled for her.
  • Contouring with cream lasts longer and looks more natural since you'll lightly top it off with foundation. This is highly recommended especially for bridal makeup or men's makeup.
  • I learned how to mimic skin shade to make sure that I cover all blemishes properly without looking it whitish or rather darker.
  • Falling in love with cream contouring.

I used the pallette on our lesson:
Men's Makeup

I truly find this makeup lesson trying but still feel accomplished.
I love how his cheekbones are accentuated and the eyes looks more open than his before pic.

Highlights on Men's Makeup:
  • Even if I've had experience in doing Men's makeup in the past, I found that I had so much more to learn.
  • I like doing men's makeup because its fast but still challenging.
  • It's pretty awkward especially if you're shy. Thank God I'm not. :)
Tips:
  • Cream contouring is pretty easy once you get the hang of it, so don't be afraid like I was. Just use little product at first and work your way through it til you get the desired look you want. Its easier to correct mistakes when small amount of product is used and just build it up as you go along.
  • You can use the tip of your foundation brush to trace a line on the hallow of your cheeks as well other parts you wish to contour, blend it with another foundation brush or a sponge to create gradation.
  • Learn the face shape of your face or model.. The technique is to make is as naturally oval shaped as you could.
  • Blending is the KEY! blend blend blend! Not too much though. Just make sure there is a natural shading that is happening on your contour.
  • Practice is another KEY. Practice as much as you could.
Hope this was helpful enough. :)

much love,
Shen

First off, I would like to thank Gracie again for the Urban Decay Book of Shadows. I am so blessed to get this as a gift from her. :)

I was hung over but still had to go to a sorority sister's dirty thirty party late in the evening. I'm glad a I went because I missed those girls so much. Being with them brings that law school mojo back in little ways... but nah.. i'm happy where i am right now. Also, going out to party gives me a chance to get a little wild with my makeup looks.

I chose green eye look because of the top I was wearing I had since highschool! Yes, since highschool! LOL! I'm glad it still fits (but its stetchable anyway!). My tummy though was embosed! hahaha!!!!

Used mostly the greens on the palette... :)

no mascara yet.. :) hehehe ( i forgot to put in on before taking a pic)

i don't look sexy here at all!! hahahaha!!

I'm just hippin' with my MAC HK Strayin' lipstick. :)

with friends and their dates. :)

enjoying my margarita c/o atty. laids

just enjoyin a smoke outside the bar. :)

I'm too much in love with my MUFE HD Foundation, MAC MSF in Medium Plus and MAC Concealers (especially when I go out at night). :) It totally erased my skin's redness, blemishes and udereye baggies.. :) I do have big bumps on the chin though that needs more concealing but they are hardly noticeable unless it's focused.. :) it's so red like tomatoes but it still lessened with these great products.. :)

Did you notice the contouring? I hope you did.. :) that's because of Dollface Contour palette. This stuff works!! :) I love how my cheekbones were defined without making it look so..... exaggerated. :)

The MAC Grand Duo Mineral blush give a great mauve glow, don't you think so? :)

In my opinion, It pays to buy these products!

much love,
Shen
