Strong women lift each other up, and when they do, amazing things happen — an extraordinary bond called sisterhood! After years of virtual catch-ups, Physiogel took us out on a date to empower each other with its SIS Day Out, which happened last August 13 and 20.

Curated booths in the event offered sisters instant self-care experiences the whole day, and they only needed to trade in Physiogel or other skincare brands' empties to join! This gave them VIP access to the Strength Booth, where participants styled their work OOTDs, Softness Booth which featured a journaling session, Moisture Booth for the make-up lovers, and lastly, the Cleanse Booth where a meditation session took place.

The highlight of this sisterly bonding? Truly inspiring chikahan sessions with our guest sisters! Beauty influencer Toni Sia graced the first leg in Southwoods Mall while actress Bianca Umali joined us in UP Town Center, sharing their unfiltered stories and empowering words with host Bianca Valerio. These sisters are life pegs personified, for they exude such strength in softness!

Despite always looking so put together they admitted that their journey to self-love wasn't a smooth one. Bianca only realized this when she took a short break from her work. "I'm not really malaaga sa sarili dati. But because of the pandemic, I learned how to make myself feel that I am at peace and that I am okay. So that pushed me to take care of myself". Toni candidly narrated that she started from the inside by learning how to say no. "With things that don't resonate with me, I just say no. When I feel like my intuition says that something is not meant for me, then I say no and stay firm in what I believe in.", Toni shared.

These ladies made it a point to prioritize themselves because self-care is non-negotiable! When it comes to their skin, at the top of their reco list is, of course, Physiogel. Ahhhh! I am loving the silhouettes of Max Mara. Designer and brand extraordaire have always been androgynous when it comes to style and it came to more prevalent this season.

Max Mara pays homage to a creative polymath whose oeuvre was overlooked for decades, and is now rediscovered. Architect, dancer, textile designer, painter and sculptor, Sophie Taeuber-Arp was that rare thing; a modernist who invested even the most everyday objects with a sense of magic and mystery.

At Cabaret Voltaire in Zurich, Taeuber-Arp and fellow artists of the avant-garde including Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee, Giorgio de Chirico, Max Ernst and Guillaume Apollinaire met nightly. Their performances, publications, recitals and readings played out an astonishing new aesthetic: Dada.

Taeuber-Arp's hastily improvised costumes and the marionettes she designed for her most famous work, `King Stag´ radiate joyful energy, kinetic spirit and theatrical panache. They are fully formed fairytale characters with a charm that lies somewhere between the robotic and the animal.

Max Mara's strong and surprising silhouettes are articulated with equal aplomb. In all the hues of a Taeuber-Arp tapestry, the collection explores playful contrasts of mini and maxi, micro and macro, skinny and outsize.

Part boot, part legging, Max Mara's crêpe-soled knitted cuissards feature anatomically placed quilting. Mohair sweaters feature similarly articulated sleeves. Paired with a quilted nylon micro-skirt, those boots express a new dynamic. If not thigh high, skirts are regal, bell shaped and full length – perfect with a skinny turtleneck and a balaclava.

The volume is turned up on trousers too; in winter white with the widest legs ever, they appear in tailored cavalry twill and jersey-backed techno-nylon. Closer inspection of those marionettes reveals how Sophie Taeuber-Arp elevates prosaic hardware to poetic heights.

Max Mara chooses a pale matte gold zipper as its talisman. Zippered pockets and side splits pop up in unexpected places, and when a tailored jacket or a mannish `cappottino', get a double zip fastening, they assume a distinctly Dada dimension.

Of course, Max Mara's coats take centre stage, perfect in form, function and finish, fit for a fairytale queen – or king. Long or short, they underline the collection's new slouch and swagger. The stuff of dreams, Teddy Bear fabric gets a fresh look too. We know it works very well in a coat, but who knew that it works in a tunic, a floor-sweeping skirt, even an audacious pair of shorts?

It gets cold, very cold in Taeuber-Arp's alpine homeland. Max Mara brings on oversized puffas – layer one over your Teddy Bear for maximum effect. And the wadding is upcycled; it derives from the otherwise waste material from the production of the Teddy Bear Coats.

Max Mara spins a yarn with a series of chunky knits featuring striking motifs blown up and abstracted. It all adds up to a collection that fully honours Max Mara's promise of sleek modern dressing, with a dash of Cabaret Voltaire's whirlwind creativity and a sprinkle of magic dust.

Bianca Valerio, our gorgeous host for this event, was hinting that Beauty Gonzalez was going to bare her all and silly 'ol me thought it was going to be a serious talk about womanhood and share some secrets with us. After all, It was March and WOmen's Month and it was a great time to talk about the realities women are facing.

But of course, it was a beauty event and I loved the talk about Habuki! It's the latest whitening brand from Japan that gives you that bright mochi skin. If you think Japanese women innately have supple fair skin, they do. And it's quite natural that they come with products that addressed many skin concerns and help them achieve a radiant smoother complexion.

Seeing Bianca was in itself a pleasure but adding Beauty as the highlight guest for that day and to see her and have her share many of her struggles and accomplishments, I was in awe. I met once during another event and it's like no day has passed. She's as gorgeous as ever and perhaps more so.

“Babae ka, hindi babae lang.”

Women have always proved that they are way more than what society limits them to be. That’s why it is only fitting to highlight their triumphs – exactly what leading healthcare company ZP Therapeutics (ZPT) did this International Women’s Month!

Virtually, ZPT spotlighted When Women Win: Hear These Feel-Good Stories of Pinays Thriving In Their Chosen Fields. Hosted by Bianca Valerio, the session gathered a powerhouse of Pinays from different fields to elevate their inspiring success stories – Founder and CEO of Ideal Visa Consultancy Charity Delmo, award-winning stage actress Sheenly Gener, President and Founder of Rags2Riches Reese Fernandez-Ruiz, and Founder and CEO of Style Genie, Abbie Victorino. Even our host Bianca is a lady boss herself being a life coach and author.

I have to admit I was out for a weekend celebration with the family when I watched this session but I just couldn't miss it. The tidbits of knowledge they shared were so vital and encouraging for a woman like myself. And the fact that it's women's month and conducted in the online magazine that taught me what true womanhood is, I just had to watch!

Also, gorgeous Bianca Valerio was hosting, who just recently shared a thought-provoking admission on being a victim and survivor of sexual assault. Nothing brings us women closer knowing that we can only rely on each other to build us up. That there will always be challenges along the way.

Truly, these women have broken the glass ceiling. But behind the waves that they’ve created are unique challenges. Sheenly fearlessly detailed how a single mom like her rose in the film and stage industry, arenas that are dominated by men. Reese, on the other hand, shared how she’s always mistaken as an assistant to a male CEO, making her realize how women’s accomplishments are usually undermined. “Every time we needed to explain ourselves, again and again, we know that there's still a lot of work to be done”, she says.

How do they confront these struggles? Softness, which Reese described as “a strength in itself. There are so many things in this world where when we apply softness, it solves the problem”. Charity agreed, especially as a woman leader. Did you know that this boss babe encourages her employees to choose family commitments over work if ever schedules conflict? Truly, empowered women empower women!

As they take charge of their own careers, they make sure to take care of their well-being, too. Abbie shared that aside from watching K-dramas, self-care with the help of their trusted ZP Therapeutics products enables her to push harder. It's been a while since I joined a skincare event and it was fun seeing friends online. I do miss going out and learning about new things. But still, safety is a priority and I'm very grateful that Physiogel Philippines mounted this FB live event to give us the low down on myth-busting skincare advice from skin experts.

Here's what I've learned.

Fact or fiction? Physiogel chats with a dermatologist to discover the truth about skincare

We’ve all got goals when it comes to our skin. Whether you want to avoid breakouts, fight irritation, or keep it blemish-free, we all have unique skincare needs — and managing them can be pretty complicated. With a myriad of trendy skincare products hitting the shelves and run-off-the-mill skincare hacks from Dr. Internet, it’s not always easy to figure out what really works and what doesn’t.

The best thing you can do? Go straight to the experts. In celebration of National Healthy Skin Month, Physiogel invited board-certified dermatologist, Dr. Coreen Sampedro, during its SIS Session on FB Live last November 20, helping us demystify skincare with professional advice.

Armed with experience and backed by science, Dr. Coreen set the record straight on typical beauty and skincare myths to better guide us in our routines. Here’s the truth about these myths:

Moisturizers can cause acne.

False, but somewhat true. Moisturizing your skin is a must, but the excessive application may cause acne. The extra product just sits on top of your face, which attracts dirt and bacteria. To help avoid breakouts when moisturizing, Dr. Coreen recommends putting on a fast-absorbing product in just the right amount.

Babies don’t need sun protection or moisturization.

False. Babies have super delicate skin that needs protection from UV rays. Babies, especially those 6 months and below, don’t need an elaborate skincare routine, so Dr. Coreen says the best thing that you can do is to use sun-protective methods, like avoiding direct sun exposure and dressing them in protective clothing. To keep their skin moisturized, she also recommends using mild, hydrating cleansers that’ll keep it smooth, soft, and safe from irritants.

Oily skin doesn’t need moisturizers.

False, but it depends. Dr. Coreen emphasized that just because the surface of your skin is oily doesn’t mean your skin cells are not dehydrated. This is what moisturizers address – they hydrate your skin cells, keeping them strong on the inside, and soft outside. The secret is picking a good moisturizer that works with your skin. Your best choice should be a light, fast-absorbing moisturizer without preservatives, fragrances, colorants, ceramides, and other nasties that might do your skin more harm than good!

Guilty of believing in these misconceptions? Physiogel’s chit-chat with Dr. Coreen tells us that an effective skincare routine starts with knowing the difference between fact and fiction. With tried-and-true advice from experts, you’ll never go wrong in achieving the healthy skin you want! The same goes for picking products that can do the job for your skin type.
