The Makeup Look: No, I'm Not Pretty. Not At All...

That's why I keep on falling in love with makeup and skin care over and over again. For the past 4 years, I became enslaved with the wonders of how a simple lipstick can change you. How an eyeliner can open up your eyes and how incredible your skin can become with just a peeling treatment. And oh! The wonders of eye cream and concealers!

Whether you're born beautiful or the pretty gene has skipped you, never let it tell you how you should look at yourself. For centuries woman has made sure that they only become and feel much more prettier. Screw those people who think you not pretty enough. Am I right?

That's why I purposely made the photo above larger. I'm thankful to have that face. It may not be up par for  what is truly pretty or it may not even come up to scratch but it's what God gave me. And because of this face, I discovered that I have knack for makeup application and learned a lot of things about skin and skin care. Because of this face, I met really awesome people who loves makeup and cosmetics as much as I do. Now tell me, how can I not love my face despite of it not being pretty enough? It has brought so much blessings I felt I won the Miss Universe title. :) #Pak!

This face is far from perfect (light years away from perfect). But how I see it and with some help with some bit of products... I see something that I can be truly proud of.

And I hope you see the same in you!

I played with my camera with the poses above. It looks like I'm getting my ID pic taken. LOL!

I remember those days when I had so many qualms about using bright eyeshadows. Then I felt myself become a bit braver every time I use it and I would have the courage to play with more colors and improve on my blending. And though others may not see it the way I do, I felt a bit empowered... a little bit more confident. Happy, even.

Purple is such a good makeup shade for us Filipinas. This shade gets me into a partying mood! It's so vibrant, edgy and totally character changing. So even if I don't have any party to go to, I find myself wearing purples a lot. Well, life is a party anyway, right?

So if ever you're in bad mood... somebody called you names, a guy dumped you or your whole days just plain sucked... why not rock a violet makeup look.

I wore this look for an event I went to and I was happy to receive compliments on my blending skills. I really was touched because we all know how it takes time and effort to get blending down to a t. Thank you, Josh and Brigitte!

For the face:

Nars Orgasm Blush with NYX HD Grinding Blush in Apricot

For the eyes:
Urban Decay Primer Potion
Eye shadows (different gradation of purples, black for defining the crease, beige for highlighting)

Majolica Majorca Lash Expander Frame Mascara
Tony Moly Lovely Eyebrow Pencil

For the Lips:
MAC Pink Nouveau Amplified Lipstick
NARS Angelika Lip Gloss

People may say that I'm not pretty enough and I gladly concede but that doesn't mean I shouldn't have fun, right? And what's more fun than creating makeup looks with the skills that you've acquired for years of playing with cosmetics. Besides, not everyone has a right to say you're not pretty enough. Unless they have the silkiest hair, fairest of face and the sexiest body. I just don't think they have the right, don't you agree? Unfortunately, there's not so many people like that. :)

What is more important than being pretty is being true to yourself and knowing how to take the good with bad and loving life trying not to hurt anyone's feelings.

And on that note...

here's a few wacky poses! Lol! (because y'all know I really wacky IRL!)

Scatterbraintures commented that I don't do wacky poses anymore. So here's one (and two) for yah, beauty! Thanks for reminding me that I can do this on my blog! Lol!

And I would like to thank the wonderful readers and visitors of this blog! So much love to y'all!

  3. Pretty ka naman ah! No one has the right to judge what is pretty because beauty is subjective. Meron na cu-cutean kay Garfield at Kermit the Frog, meron namang hindi. Toinks! Yun anak ko Pokemon ang type niya. Ayun na. :p

  4. I really appreciate it when you empower women in you posts. I love the way you express your thoughts especially about beauty. I don't post comments often but I always read your blog. For me, beauty is fleeting... In the end, what really matters is that you have enjoyed your life to the fullest. Just like the motto of my blog... there is no self waiting to be discovered... only a self waiting to be created. You have a wonderful talent and you have a created a wonderful person that many people look up to. Great make up look Shen. I wish I'm as talented as you are when it comes to make up. My blending skills suck.  Hehe :P More power to your blog. Have a great day!

Hello Ms. Shen! :) I have been a loyal reader of yours, silently before, but am commenting and have tweeted w/ you once or twice.. I have started reading your posts around 1.5yrs ago. Those were the times when I have really decided that I have to get rid of my annoying pimples 'coz it puts down my confidence... You were one of those who have helped me search great products for my skin. I have been battling with my pimples eversince HS and it was only about a year ago that I was able to keep them at bay, though I get some here and there but it can be concealed already. :)

You are truly a unique person Ms. Shen! You're right about how make-up can really boost up your confidence level and how it can really prettify a girl. Though it's not really everything to be beautiful, what we truly need is a strong yet sweet personality to have a truly beautiful skin deep. For me you're really pretty and kind-hearted person. You're a real fighter in life, I remember your posts regarding the loss of your mother and other stuff that have truly touched my heart. We must never ever give in to the pressures of society or to the mean people that surrounds us or else we'll end up sobbing all day in a little corner.

Thank you Ms. Shen for your painstaking hard work in telling us inspiring and beautiful thoughts. :) More power to your blog. God Bless.

PS. Sorry for the novel kind of comment.

First of all I love that Taylor Swift song. Second, you really rocked that purple eye makeup. This post is such an inspiring one. Looking at myself, I don't think I'm the standard pretty girl but it never became a hindrance for me to be a beauty blogger. I still think of myself as someone who is beautiful in my own way and I'm glad with what God gave me.

Thanks for this inspirational post, Shen. Your blog is one of the first beauty blogs I've read and it's def one of the blogs I look up to.

  14. Whoever told you or said you're not pretty is CRAZY. I believe that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but dang, he/she gotta have his/her eyes checked!

I love the colors on your eyes here. I wish I'd have more time to learn how to put on makeup. I've only so far improved on my eyebrows. :D

Keep it up with this blog, gurl! I LOVE your looks :)

  16. I don't comment here a lot and I didn't comment before but I keep coming back to this post :P Sometimes I think the need to feel pretty is overrated. Ako din, I don't think I'm pretty (but not in a bad, sulky, self-pitying way). Believe it or not, I'm ok with not being pretty and I accept how I look like. My looks is not me. Minsan kasi, parang hindi healthy to convince myself that I'm pretty. Parang counterintuitive sya. When I see someone stereotypically pretty, I go back to square one. I felt like the more I focus on wanting to feel pretty, the more I slide. Tumaas yung self-esteem ko when I accepted how I look like, "this is me, and I'm ok with it, there's nothing wrong with me." Now, when I see really good-looking people, I don't feel bad anymore.
